The word Patuxent is an old Native American - Algonquin - meaning "water rushing over smooth stones". The river starts as a bubbling spring in rocky soil in at north edge of Montgomery and Howard Counties, winds its past six counties on the way to the Chesapeake Bay. Along the way it passes through a diverse landscape of isolated wilderness, roaring falls, reservoirs, historic towns, wetlands and marshes. The river hosts a rich wildlife habitats and thriving communities.
