Come and join us on a spring birding trip along the Patuxent River with former state Senator Gerald Winegrad on May 16 at 8:00 a.m. meeting at XXXXX. Senator Winegrad, known as the Environmental Conscience of the Senate, has had a life-long fascination and love of wildlife and possesses an expertise in birds and their conservation. He has travelled the world looking for birds and other wildlife, from Madagascar to Papua New Guinea and from Brazil and Midway Island to the high Alaskan Arctic. Gerald returns to the U.S. from Ecuador on May 11, after travelling to the Andean rainforests of Ecuador and to the Galapagos Islands for 16 days of birding and wildlife.

Gerald began his formal environmental career in 1969 when he served as Counsel to the National Wildlife Federation. He served with distinction in the Maryland Legislature for over 16 years first as a member of the House of Delegates (1978-1983) and then as a State Senator (1983 to 1995). He received numerous awards for his legislative work, including Legislator or Conservationist of the year from such groups as the Sierra Club, Audubon Society of the Central Atlantic States, Clean Water Action, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and the Maryland Public Health Association. When he left the Legislature to work full time for wildlife, he became Vice President for Policy of the American Bird Conservancy in Washington, D.C and from 1995-2008 he directed the work of the 90 member organization Bird Conservation Alliance and was a leader in national efforts to conserve avian species.

The Senator was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland Graduate School of Public Policy where he taught courses he developed on Chesapeake Bay Restoration and Wildlife Management.

He was Vice President of the Anne Arundel Bird Club for nine years securing more than 60 gifted speakers on bird and other wildlife topics. He still leads birding trips and lectures on bird and other wildlife topics. Gerald lives on Oyster Creek just off of the Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis and is a crabber.
